Widevine Media Optimizer Firefox is a legacy browser add-on that enabled playback of DRM‑protected and adaptive streaming video in older versions of Mozilla Firefox. It installed the Widevine content decryption and media components required by streaming services that depended on Widevine before native HTML5 Encrypted Media Extensions were widely supported. This add-on has since been discontinued and is incompatible with modern Firefox releases, which now include an integrated Widevine Content Decryption Module (CDM) and no longer support NPAPI-style plugins. For current use, update Firefox and enable DRM in the browser settings instead of installing this legacy plugin.

Key points:

  • Purpose: Provide Widevine-based DRM and adaptive streaming support in legacy Firefox.
  • Compatibility: Designed for older Firefox versions; not supported on current releases.
  • Status: Obsolete/retired, replaced by Firefox’s built-in Widevine CDM.

Widevine Media Optimizer Firefox is developed by Widevine Technologies. The most popular version of this product among our users is 6.0.
